Scholars and Philosophers through the ages have speculated as to the purpose of life. The “WHY.” Some see it as Pleasure — Go for the gusto. Some see it as Things — He who dies with the most toys, wins. Some see it as Legacy — leaving behind you a better world than you found. But God told us why he created the universe in the Bible. It was to fashion an eternal Family for Himself. The earth, the stars, Israel, the Cross and the Church are all merely means to that end. The first thing God instituted was the Family. The pattern of the family is given to us over and over — God is the Father and Israel is likened to his unfaithful wife. Jesus is the Only Begotten Son and the Church is His bride. Ultimately this world will pass away, having served its purpose. A new world will be created and the eternal family of God will live with Him there (Rev 21). We were created to be part of His family — to love Him. And, we will never know true peace, joy or happiness until we begin to fulfill the purpose for which we were created.

There are many “Family Churches” But as soon as you arrive your family is separated — Nursery, Youth (by grade), Jr. & Sr High, College, Singles, Young Adults, Women’s and Men’s Ministries, Seniors, etc.

This “Family Church” is exactly that. A Family. Ours. We meet together. As a family. And, sometimes that becomes chaos! But it’s our priority, because it’s God’s. We meet each weekend, often on Saturday or Sunday mornings, and spend the day together as a family, eating chatting and studying God’s Word. We welcome friends and visitors to our “sabbaths” but are more interested in seeing God’s Family grow than our church. So numbers are not important to us.

“The Church”, as defined by Scripture, is not a building but the people who meet in it. And, the church described in the New Testament didn’t meet in a building erected for that purpose, but in homes. It was not a business but a ministry.

Pastor Steve’s sermons are recorded and available here. We stress understanding over experience and entertainment. We make little effort to offer a “professional” affair because we are not professionals (we don’t do this for the money, which is the definition of a professional). Indeed, we have no expenses so we collect no tithes or offerings. We encourage giving — and not merely of money — where it is needed, rather than to pay salaries and build buildings. We believe it is a mistake to place an organization between ourselves and the needy, for no other reason than convenience.

Many have called this kind of Christianity, immature or “Primitive.” And it’s usually not meant kindly. But we don’t see it that way. Thomas Aquinas was touring the splendor and riches of the Vatican’s treasure rooms, when the Pope approached and said (with a broad smile), “Yes, we can no longer say, ‘silver and gold have we none.’” To which Aquinas replied, “Yes, and neither can we say, ‘rise up and walk.’”

Many years ago,

The SHED was Calvary Chapel of Etiwanda, in Ontario, California. We still bear many similarities with that background. Today we meet in Lake Arrowhead, CA. And, though now separated by time and geography, many of the original congregation still join with us online, weekly.
